We love sea turtles! Growing up near Tybee Beach, our students grow up going to the beach, listening to lifeguards and locals explain the importance of protecting sea turtle nests and conservation of the sand dunes, but we don't usually study it in class. Ocean month was a fun way for us to tie common core standards into one of our favorite subjects! We Skyped with the Turtle Hospital in Marathon Key, Florida to learn about sea turtles, how to protect them, and how we can protect our oceans in order to protect not only sea turtles but ocean life as a whole. The Turtle Hospital was amazing and answered all of our students' questions! The woman in charge of our Skype was patient and explained things in terms our 2nd and 3rd graders could understand. In today's budget conscious world, it's lovely we can connect with places through Skype in order to enrich our learning experiences for our students. While we have an aquarium on Tybee and a sea turtle center near us, it's hard for so many of our students to visit 1) because of money, and 2) time constraints from the curriculum. Skype in the Classroom has been a wonderful tool to help us connect with places like the Turtle Hospital in Marathon Key. The Turtle Hospital has Skyped with classrooms all over the United States.
