KidRex is a safe search engine for students that is powered by Google Custom Search and Google SafeSearch Technology. In addition to typical filters applied to searchers, the site maintains its own database of inappropriate websites and keywords to further reduce the possibility of inappropriate search returns. It's just like using a normal Google search, except with extra precautiton!
Why use it?
I have always been on the side of teaching students how to navigate through the muck you find online because they will encounter it on their own outside of school and the home. I would rather teach them in a safe enviornment with me (as a parent or teacher) how to navigate and have discussions before they just 'Google' their answers on their own and find themselves down the rabbit hole of the internet into the deep, dark depths of the unknown. That and I am always anti-censoring...
With that being said, I am learning the need to scaffold these second and third grade babies up to the normal Google search. KidRex has done a wonderful job in fullfilling that need.
Create a link to KidRex on classroom computers for students to use as a default search engine. Use this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to demonstrate how to search for items or when searching with your students.
Use this as one of your search engines during research projects for upper elementary students.
